Lots of praise going around for Prey from 20th Century Studios. The Predator prequel is being put on lists close to the original film above several of the other franchise films by fans. So it comes as no surprise that Disney is reporting that this film is the number one premiere on Hulu to date. This includes all films and TV series debuts on the streaming service. Additionally, Prey is the most watched film premiere on Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ under the Star Banner in other territories. This is based on the hours watched in the first three days of its release.
When Prey was announced there were a lot of rumblings about the strategy of its release. Specifically, the fact that it would go straight to Hulu and not have a theatrical release. But as we can see from the results, it has brought a massive amount of traffic to their streaming sites around the world. Now, will this set a precedent for future releases? I wonder if this is a case of Disney having such a massive catalog of releases, that they can afford to bite the bullet on some films to send straight to streaming instead of a theatrical release. Although it’s important to note that they did save money on marketing and a theatrical release. Most of its publicity has come from overwhelming positive word of mouth.
Whatever the case I am very happy for director Dan Trachtenberg and the star of the film, Amber Midthunder.
