Rampage: Dwayne Johnson & Brad Peyton On The Video Game Movie Curse

We’re on this topic again. If you’re either a video game fan or a film fan (or both), chances are you’ve heard of the video game curse at least in passing. If you still have no idea what I’m talking about, try to think of the last good video game movie you saw. Exactly.

Despite Hollywood’s best intentions (or in Uwe Boll’s case, worst intentions), they can’t make a good video game movie for the life of them. Resident Evil? Dud (though I personally enjoyed that first one). Super Mario Bros.? Dud. Assassin’s Creed? Dud. Hell, even Hollywood’s golden boy, Dwayne Johnson has starred in one such dud: Doom. He’s also set to star in a new one in the upcoming Rampage.

Speaking with Total Film Magazine (via ComicBook.com), Johnson acknowledged the curse, saying:

“I like the video game curse, because I made Doom. And Doom was a movie based off a very popular video game and was incredibly unsuccessful. So I lived the curse, and I experienced it.”

So how did they go about preventing that from happening again? For starters, Johnson did a lot of research, “Also making sure that there was a winking charm and humor in Rampage that, for me personally, was not in Doom.”

One other difference between something like Doom and Rampage comes in the story — or lack thereof — in Rampage.

“[Fans of the game] get all the things that you remember about it and you can smile about. But then there’s all this room to do things and build a story and build characters and do what I wanted. That allows us to exceed expectations and have a lot of fun and just deliver in a way that a good movie needs to deliver.”
