RUMOR: Warner Bros Animation Group Developing Batman Beyond Movie For Theatrical Release [UPDATE: Debunked]

UPDATE: To sleep, perchance to dream.  Unfortunately, some dreams you just have to wake up from. It was a wonderful 24 hours, but it seems that a theatrical animated Batman Beyond film was never in the cards. The Wrap reporter and Heroic Hollywood Editor in Chief, Umberto Gonzalez, has debunked the rumor that we would be getting a movie after speaking with his sources.

This is certainly a disappointing development for anyone that was a fan of the series, to include this writer. Hopefully, someone was Warner Bros. was paying attention to the positive reaction to the purported leak. It would certainly be nice to see Terry get his due.

ORIGINAL STORY:

It was a theme unlike any Batman theme before it, for a show unlike any Batman before it, but if the sound of the hard-hitting guitar riffs and drums bring a smile to your face, you’re in the right place.  Created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, Batman Beyond was a late 90s cartoon that took place in the year 2039 and featured a wholly original character, Terry McGinnis, taking up the mantle of the Batman from a retired Bruce Wayne in a Gotham meets Blade Runner future.  Despite lasting only three years and 52 episodes, it was quite well regarded.

According to Geeks WorldWide, if recent leaks are to be believed, it seems Warner Animation Group is dusting off Terry and Co. for a big screen adaptation that may have been inspired by the success of Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-VerseThe report is coupled with leaked concept art for an unknown animated project that turned up on r/DCEUleaks this week. It would appear that the leaks do indeed point to some kind of project that involves Batman Beyond. What that project is, we’ll have to wait for an official announcement from WB and unfortunately, that may be a ways off. The leak is listed as an unannounced project for 2022.

Whatever the veracity of the leaks, it caused the original Terry McGinnis voice actor, Will Friedle, to throw his hat in the ring to return to the roll.
