Solo: A Star Wars Story – Qi’ra’s Hand-To-Hand Combat Has A History In Old Star Wars Canon

If you paid close attention is Solo: A Star Wars Story you may have heard Emilia Clarke’s Qi’ra mention her training in Teräs Käsi, the martial art of the Star Wars Universe. The idea of having a hand-to-hand form of combat first appeared in the John Wagner novel, Shadows of the Empire.

Gary Whitta, who co-wrote Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, confirmed via his Twitter account that the fighting style was also set to be included in the film, though it was later cut. This is the combat form that Saw Guerrera taught to Jyn Erso.

The first time I remember hearing the term was when a friend purchased the video game, Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi. The game was mediocre at best, however that didn’t stop me and my friends from playing it day and night, as after all, it was a Star Wars fighting game. One good thing about the game, which was different than most Star Wars games at the time, was that you could actually play as Luke, Leia, Han, and Chewy, among other characters such as Boba Fett and even Darth Vader.

I think it is pretty cool that Teräs Käsi has now officially been made canon in the Star Wars universe.
