Sonic The Hedgehog Sequel Officially In Development

A Sonic the Hedgehog sequel is in the works, folks!

No one expected Sonic the Hedgehog to do much business. This was a film that was relentlessly bagged on by fanboys around the web. It also didn’t help that our first peek of the character featured an uncanny valley abomination. Even when director Jeff Fowler went in and changed the design of the character, many fans doubted it would improve the story much. Many felt like it’d be nothing more than a subpar, mediocre mess.

And you know what? They weren’t completely wrong. At the end of the day, Sonic the Hedgehog was totally mediocre. And I don’t even mean that in a bad way. From beginning to end, it was predictable and safe. But that was the right approach for the movie. It was safe and fun in the best way and managed to be that much more enjoyable because of it. They didn’t need to reinvent the wheel with Sonic the Hedgehog, so they didn’t. They only need to hit those satisfying and familiar story beats.

The film went on to become one of the best-performing video game movie of all time. While it may not have edged out Detective Pikachu’s $436 million worldwide cume, its lower budget made its $300-million-plus haul perfectly serviceable. A sequel was inevitable.

According to THR, Paramount and Sega are in the early stages of development. Returning to the director’s chair is Jeff Fowler, and he won’t be the only one coming back. Scribes Pat Casey and Josh Miller will be lending their talents to the script once again. While it’s probably too early to confirm any casting decisions, I think many of us are expecting to see a return of the entire cast. Ben Schwartz lovingly voiced the Blue Blur himself, James Marsden was a great companion, and Jim Carrey was delightfully over-the-top as Robotnik.

The outlet revealed no plot details, but I think we can expect the return of Tails, who was shown in the post-credits scene of the film. I’d also like to see Knuckles the Echidna show up as a secondary antagonist. We saw some of his Echidna brethren pop up in the first movie, so this would be a natural escalation of things.
