Star Wars: Donald Glover Thinks Lando Is More Complicated Than Han Solo
However, while Han Solo as a character will be a challenge, it can’t be overstated how much of a challenge his good ol’ pal Lando Calrissian will be. While he hasn’t had nearly as much film screen time as Han, his place in the Star Wars canon is still one of the most beloved out there. Earlier this year, we found out that Donald Glover would be tasked with the unenviable of playing Lando, but based on everything he’s said, he certainly seems to have the right mindset. Speaking with Deadline, he delved a bit into the pressure, as well as his thoughts on the character as a whole.
“Lando seems to be a lot of people’s favorite character. It’s cool. It’s a lot of pressure, but it’s also very exciting. He was my favorite character too. I grew up on Star Wars. It’s just cool to see him again. I feel like people like him ’cause he has a lot of style, but also he’s a complicated character in this world. I think even Han isn’t as complicated as Lando is. From the first time you meet him, you don’t know whether to trust him or not, and you’re constantly not knowing whether to trust him. I like that about him.”
Indeed Lando is one suave and shifty fellow. However, there is one fact: we know that he and Han will eventually be square prior to the events of The Empire Strikes Back, and that will cut into some of the tension that will inevitably play out in the film regarding his allegiances. That being said, there’s no NEED for he and Han to be square by the film’s end. There are likely still a lot of years between the movie’s end and A New Hope, and as such, plenty of time for them to put their differences aside up until then. In short, just because we ultimately know everything will be okay doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be okay by the end of the film.
Anyways, it’s not a lot of info from Glover, but it’s always great to hear an actor taking a role seriously, and we don’t think they could have picked a better Lando.
The currently-untitled Han Solo Star Wars film hits theaters on May 25, 2018.
