Star Wars: Episode IX – Mark Hamill Delighted That The Role Of Leia Will Not Be Recast

We all wondered who was going to be in Star Wars: Episode 9. After the death of Luke Skywalker, would he be back as a Force ghost? How would JJ Abrams deal with the tragic real-life death of Carrie Fisher whose character survived the events of The Last Jedi?

We now know of course that Mark Hamill will indeed appear in Episode 9 and that so will Carrie Fisher via unused footage from 2015’s The Force Awakens. As production gets set to begin on the final part of this sequel trilogy, the official cast list was released and you can check out the story in the related section below.

LRM has written articles as have many other sites about just how Lucasfilm and Abrams should deal with the passing of Fisher. As for fans, I think I have heard every possible idea, from killing her off screen, to recasting the role completely or simply using CGI to fill in the gaps. Finally, we now know a little about how they are going to attempt to pull this off. How much footage there is, whether this means a very small part for Leia, we just don’t know? One person who is very happy with this decision is Mark Hamill who of course will reprise his role as Luke Skywalker, twin brother to Leia. Hamill took to Twitter as he often does to express his delight that the role would not be recast.

Like Hamill I’m also happy that they are not recasting the role. I will judge how well this approach works only when I see the movie, but I definitely did not want another actress in the role of Leia. Of course whether I see it at all is still up for debate. I was not happy with the way the series went under Rian Johnson’s direction and not overly keen on Abrams’ The Force Awakens as a result either. More than likely my curiosity will find me sat in the theatre opening weekend as always, but who knows?

How do you feel about Abrams decision and do you agree with Hamill on the idea of recasting? Sound off in the comments below.
