Star Wars: How The Empire Strikes Back’s Director Influenced The Last Jedi’s Worst Line
Disclaimer: This post contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
If you’ve seen Star Wars: The Last Jedi, chances are you either love it or hate it. For better or worse, it’s become perhaps the most polarizing film to date. Some (like yours truly) think the film is evidence that Lucasfilm is willing to take real narrative risks with their series, while others find a lot of these changes to be betrayals of what came before.
However, while I adored the film, there are still one or two moments in it that even I found to be a bit…difficult to bear. The one that comes to mind specifically is when Rose saves Finn (which really takes the wind of the sails in terms of his character arc). When Finn comes to her, she says that cheesy line about not being able to win by fighting what they hate, but saving what they love.
Blah! Gross, right?
Well, it turns out we can probably thank Empire Strikes Back director Irvin Kershner for that gem. IGN reporter Scott Collura unearthed an interview with Kershner, and in it, he outlines the big differences between the Empire and Rebellion.
Remember what Rose said in @rianjohnson’s The Last Jedi about winning the war not by fighting what we hate, but saving what we love? Here’s director Irvin Kershner while filming Empire Strikes Back… pic.twitter.com/INTFj3JI4z

For those less Twitter-inclined, Kershner said:
“That’s the difference between the Rebels and the Empire. It’s possible to fight because you love, not just because you hate.”
While I can definitely appreciate this sentiment being added into The Last Jedi, there is something to be said for that being more of an underlying motivation. There was no need to say it aloud, and in some ways, the line almost takes the power away from said sentiment.
What did you think of the line in the film? Did it pull you out of it? Let us know your thoughts down below!
