Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Details On Benicio Del Toro’s Character Revealed

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, a good deal of Star Wars: The Last Jedi information has been making its way online, with the film still four months away from release. More specifically, we’ve been getting a lot of details relating to the characters, both old and new, including their motivations following The Force Awakens and leading into The Last Jedi. Now, we have our juiciest details on a new character played by Benicio del Toro yet, but sadly (thankfully?), he is not playing The Collector, in a rad Marvel/Star Wars crossover. So, the above image is not what he will look like in The Last Jedi… though we do have that for you below!

Benecio del Toro originally said he is playing a villain, but more recently the actor admitted that he didn’t know if his character is a villain or not, but he didn’t think so. Now, it sounds like he was perhaps telling the truth… both times.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Del Toro plays a man who goes by “DJ.” The official one-liner from Lucasfilm reads:

“DJ is an enigmatic figure whose tattered, threadbare clothes and lackadaisical attitude conceal a sharp mind and expert skills.”

But, what exactly are DJ’s particular set of skills? Can he spin a record like no other in the galaxy? John Boyega, who plays Finn in the Star Wars films and shares scenes with Del Toro, said this:

“We just need a codebreaker and he’s the best in the galaxy. Unfortunately, he’s very dodgy and only in it for financial gain. He doesn’t fight for any side.

He has distinct opinions. The Resistance bombs the First Order one day, the First Order bombs the Resistance on another. It’s an ongoing war that will never end. For him, he’s trying to benefit off of that — which doesn’t make him the person you want to trust.”

So, he’s not a bad guy in the sense that he serves the First Order. In fact, he sounds like a tepid ally, perhaps one who betrays our heroes. We’ve seen many characters without strict allegiances across the eight Star Wars live-action features; those who work for the highest bidder. Unfortunately, the highest bidder is often the Empire in the original trilogy, so hopefully Finn will have more luck in The Last Jedi with DJ than Han Solo had in The Empire Strikes Back with Vader’s paid bounty hunters.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15, 2017.
