Will Wonder Woman 1984 be pushed back again?
The re-opening of theaters was always going to be a rocky process. Across the nation, we find theaters that have very strict restrictions and limits. As well as many areas where they are still not permitted to open. This has caused a major headache for studios as they continue to have to make tough decisions on films they have lined up. Some have taken the alternative route and released it via PVOD. While others have used the alternative resurgence of Drive-In theaters. News about bumping back release dates used to be a sign of trouble, now it almost doesn’t seem like a big deal.

One of the unfortunate films that have been affected by delays is Warner Bros. Wonder Woman 1984. Deadline is reporting that it can once again be pushed back from October 2nd to some time in November or possibly December. At this point why set a date right? The domino effect would be that if Wonder Woman 1984 is moved to December, then Warner Bros. would have to move Dune to sometime in 2021.
Another reason why it’s is being pushed back is Tenet. There are sources estimating that New York and Los Angeles theaters won’t open until late September or early October. Warner Bros. is being stubborn about the Christopher Nolan film trying to make a splash in those big markets. So they will probably be keeping Tenet out longer in theaters. If Wonder Woman 1984 came out at the same time, chances are that this would hurt Tenet from making any kind of mark at the box office during that time.

These release date changes don’t seem like a big deal, but they are. Especially for those theaters that are open and are struggling to drum up interest with classic films. What hurts the most is when a film like Mulan goes straight to PVOD and skips theaters altogether. Hopefully, we can soon permanently open theaters back up again and stop playing these waiting games with some of these highly anticipated films.
