The Comic Stash I Top Comics And Series Picks For October

Hello and welcome back to my monthly column, The Comic Stash, on what comics and series to check out this month in comics! As most comic fans I look forward to Wednesday, each week to see what I might have missed or what came out!  I order my comics through my favorite comic shop in Nashville, TN called Rick’s Comics. These are just my picks of comics that you should read and maybe add to your collection at home. I make my picks because of the story, artist, or writer working on the comic. Please know I never want to disrespect what you like to read or other great comics that are out there.

Week One October 6, 2021

From DC Comics a great comic that sold out its first issues. The Nice House on the Lake #5 by James Tynion IV with art by Alvaro Martinez Bueno. Veronica may be able to solve more of the mystery of the house in this issue.  Image Comics releases issue #3 of their great running series, The Me You Love in the Dark by Skottie Young with art by Jorge Corona. Ro has a friend in the house which leads to a more romantic one. However, can this spirit be trusted?

Image Comics also has a new comic run coming known as, A Righteous Thirst for Vengeance #1 by Rick Remender with art by Andre Lima Araujo. The main character Sonny just wants to visit some friends that leads to a whole new world of trouble.

The Comic Stash October

AfterShock Comic has a new series, Chicken Devil #1 by Brian Buccellato with art by Hayden Sherman. In this story we follow Mitchell as he must deal with drug dealers and focusing on getting revenge. Artists Writers and Artisans Inc. has a new series, Out #1 by Rob Williams with art by Will Conrad. In this story we go back to World War 2 where we find the Nazi’s trying to use a Vampire to turn the tide of the war.

Dynamite Comics is bringing back an old fan favorite Jennifer Blood #1 by Fred Van Lente with art by Vincenzo Federici. This first issue has a ton of variant covers to pick from at your local comic shop. For fans of the movie Willy’s Wonderland there is Willy’s Wonderland #1 from American Mythology written by James Kuhoric and S.A. Check with art by Puis Calzada. Should be a fun prequel as we see how things unfold and became so bloody and creepy!

The last book worth checking out is from Blue Juice Comics, Billy the Kit #1 by Justin Gray with art by Barry McClain. We get to follow Billy the Kit in the wild west as he trues to get revenge for his family.

Week Two October 13, 2021

Marvel Comics has The Amazing Spider-Man #76, coming out this week as we see how they end this series run. Kelly Thompson, Saladin Ahmed, Cody Ziglar, and Zeb Wells are the writers with art by Partick Gleason.

Speaking of ending series, Marvel also has, The Immortal Hulk #50 by Al Ewing, with art by Joe Bennett, and cover art by Alex Ross, ending its run this week. This is a great 50 issues run with beautiful covers by Alex Ross. I hate to see this run end because it has such a great story to tell, but there will be another new series coming out.

The Comic Stash October

Also, from Marvel Comics this week is, Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters #5 by Charles Soule with art by Luke Ross.  Marvel Comics has a new Star Wars series, Star Wars: The High Republic — Trail of Shadows #1 by Daniel Older with art by Dave Wachter. This is a huge treat for Star Wars fans and a must for your collection! For Black Panther fans comes a new series as well, Black Panther Legends #1 by Tochi Onyebuchi and art by Setor Fiadzigbey.

From DC Comics comes the second issue of Harley Quinn: The Animated Series — The Eat, Bang, Kill Tour #2. This is a crazy comic and a blast to read if you’re a fan of the animated series, so grab this issue!  Archie Comics finally has issue #9 of  Chilling Adventures of Sabrina coming out by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa with art by Robert Hack. It has been some time since they took a break from this series. The last issue #8 came out back in October 2017. I have always enjoy this character, so it is great that the creative team is back to finish the Witch War storyline.

From IDW Publishing we have a fan favorite storyline, Star Trek: The Mirror War #1 by Scott Tipton and David Tipton with art by Gavin Smith. Scout Comics has a new series, Swamp Dogs #1 by Theo Prasidis and J.M. Brandt with art by Kewber Baal. This should be a fun series as we get Confederate soldiers brought back by voodoo magic and a heavy metal band ready to face off with them.

Second Sight Publishing has a creepy new series, These Damn Kids #1 by Bradley Golden with art by Peter Breau. A small town where kids start acting strange and are attacking the adults. There is a Children of the Corn vibe going on.

Week Three October 20, 2021

Marvel Comics has a new Thor #18 coming out this week and it should be fun because we get to see the story focus on Throg and his secret mission. This is by Danny Cates with art by Pasqual Ferry, who are doing a great job on this run of Thor. Marvel Comics will have, The Death of Doctor Strange #2 by Jed MacKay with art by Lee Garbett out this week as well. After a great cliff hanger form the first issue, we need to know what happens next!

DC Comics has a one-shot special coming out, Batman: The Long Halloween Special #1 by Jeph Loeb with art by Tim Sale. This should be a great story for Batman fans as we go back 25 years to a Halloween where things may have been covered up to hide a secret. DC Comics has a new comic, Catwoman: Lonely City #1 by Cliff Chiang. We get to see the aftermath of Gotham heroes and villains who have been taken out and what Catwoman will do after she is out of prison.

DC Comics Black Label has a new series, Refrigerator Full of Heads #1 by Rio Youers and art by Tom Fowler. The title says enough as we return to Brody Island for another mystery. Image Comics has Vinyl #5 by Dough Wagner with art by Dace Stewart coming out this week. The story is bloody and crazy, but a total joy to read.

The Comic Stash October

Also, from Image Comics comes, Gunslinger Spawn #1 by Todd McFarlane and Ales Kot, with art by Philip Tan and Kevin Keane. This Spawn is a fan favorite, and this new series should be perfect for them. This issue also has a few variant covers to choose from as well.

Image Comics is starting a new series run as Erik Larsen takes over the character Ant with issue #1 this week.  Scout Comics this week has, We Don’t Kill Spiders #2 by Joseph Schmalke and John Gallagher. This is a fun book so far as we have a witch working with a Viking detective to help solve a serial murder. Dynamite Comics has an old fan favorite return in a new series, Purgatori #1 by Ray Fawkes with art by Alvaro Sarraseca. This of course being a number one will have a few variant covers to choose from.

Week Three October 27, 2021

I am a big Batman fan and looking forward to DC’s Detective Comics #1044 by Mariko Tamaki and Stephanie Phillips, with art by David Lapham and Dan Mora. This is part two of the story arc, Fear State and the story is good so far.

DC Comics has a new series, Task Force Z #1 by Mattew Rosenberg with art by Eddy Barrows. Another title coming from DC Comics is perfect for Halloween is, DC vs. Vampires #1 by James Tynion IV and Matthew Rosenberg with art by Otto Schmidt.

Marvel Comics has Daredevil #35 by Chip Zdarsky with art by Marco Checchetto, coming out this week. This will be a great issue as we get to see Elektra as Daredevil taking on Bullseye and friends.

Marvel also has a new series run of Venom coming out this week, Venom #1 by Al Ewing and Ram V. with art by Bryan Hitch and Andrew Currie. With this being a new number one, we of course will have a ton of variants to pick from.

The Comic Stash October

Boom! Studios has a new series coming out, House of Slaughter #1 by James Tynion IV and Tate Brombal with art by Werther Dell Edera and Chris Shehan with cover art by Jenny Frison. In this story we will get the backstory of how Erica Slaughter becomes a monster hunter in Something is Killing the Children. Aftershock Comics has a new series, Cross to Bear #1 by Marko Stojanovic with art by Sinisa Banovic.  This story will be interesting as we see the outcome of Jack the Ripper.

Aftershock Comics also has a one-shot, After Dark #1 by a group of artist and writers. They tell a few stores of horror and this just another perfect comic for Halloween. ARH Comix has a comic, Undying Queen #1 by Arahom Radjah with art by Daniel Pascual.
