The Man You Call When You’re Out of Names: Relay – Trailer

Riz Ahmed doesn’t just act, he sneaks into roles like a thief in the night. British-Pakistani, razor-sharp, born in ’82, and already etched into the film vault as Rick in Nightcrawler and Carlton Drake in Venom. Now he’s back in the trailer for Relay, and the man looks like he’s carrying secrets the way other people carry shopping bags.

The preview kicks off with a 70’s-style voice-over that could’ve been ripped from a Gene Hackman reel. Which makes sense, because Relay hums with the paranoia of The Conversation. Ahmed feels like the guy you dial when the phone book runs out of names. The fixer with no fixed address.

The whole thing flirts with Equalizer energy too. Watching it, I couldn’t help but wonder—what if Antoine Fuqua spun the dial back, de-aged Robert McCall for one more shadow mission? Or hell, let John David Washington step into that trench coat and handle some unfinished Cold War business.

But back to Relay. The trailer’s a mood piece, a slow-burn pulse. It promises a story soaked in surveillance, trust issues, and the kind of double-crosses that stick like a knife.

Relay hits theaters August 22. Bring a trench coat. Maybe a burner phone.

Here’s the synopsis. In Relay, Riz plays a world-class “fixer” who specializes in brokering lucrative payoffs between corrupt corporations and the individuals who threaten their ruin. He keeps his identity a secret through meticulous planning and always follows an exacting set of rules. But when a message arrives one day from a potential client (Lily James), needing his protection just to stay alive, the rules quickly start to change.
