Yes, when we think of Star Wars, we understandably think of a lot of big-picture things. We think of the space battles, the visual effects, and the fantastical and lived-in world presented to us. But, at the end of the day, there’s a lot more to Star Wars than that. Like all great stories, none of this would mean much if we didn’t love the characters.
Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie, Rey, Finn, Poe, and the rest. It’s because of our love of the characters that this space saga has lasted as long as it has, and it’s this attention to character Lucasfilm hopes to bring to The Mandalorian.

Speaking with Variety, one of the series’ director, Bryce Dallas Howard, she teased this aspect of the show:
“We’re going to connect with the character. Things are very character-driven. I come from the background of being an actor and understanding not just making leaps because it says something on the page, but really being like, ‘Okay, the emotional logic is really adding up here and really paying off.’”
While this does seem like an obvious “gimme” in terms of things audiences want to see, it would be easy to get caught up in simply wanting a “badass space western with a Mandalorian at the forefront.” Clearly, based on the trailers we’ve seen, yes that’s exactly what’s happening, but the fact they have someone like Howard — who very much comes from the world of acting and character — does seem to point to them having their heads on straight in terms of priorities.
