Has the Purge finally made its way into the real world? Luckily, no.
Imagine this. You’re out on a walk, trying to cleanse your mind from the doldrums of staying inside all day. You’re a good citizen. You’ve been distancing yourself socially and restricting your excursions to grocery runs. After all this time inside, you’ve earned yourself a little walk. You glance at your watch and notice it’s almost curfew time. Good thing you’re pretty much at your home anyway. And then you hear it. You hear the unforgettable sirens.
You’ve seen The Purge, its sequels, and its TV series enough times to know what comes next. You wait for the notification that all emergency services are suspended for the next 12 hours. Your heart leaps out of your chest as you await the nuts with masks to start making their way around the corner. Thankfully, that doesn’t happen, because the U.S. government hasn’t (yet) approved such extreme measures.
Instead, this is just a simple misunderstanding. In Crowley, Louisiana, the familiar siren was used to start the curfew of Acadia Parish residents. Take a listen for yourself.

Apparently, Crowley Chief Jimmy Brousard was not familiar with the associations the sirens had with the Purge franchise. Luckily, he agreed that the siren should be changed moving forward.
“Last night a ‘Purge Siren’ was utilized by the Crowley Police Department as part of their starting curfew,” Acadia Parish Sheriff, K.P. Gibson wrote on behalf of the department. “We have received numerous complaints with the belief that our agency was involved in this process.
“We were not involved in the use of the ‘Purge Siren’ and will not utilize any type of siren for this purpose. Calls regarding this matter should be directed to the Crowley Police / Chief Broussard and not the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office.”
If nothing else, I’m sure this helped shake some of the boredom out of the eyes of some citizens. What would you have done if this happened to you? Would you immediately have started looting your local liquor store? Let us know your thoughts down below!
