The Russo Brothers Not Against Bringing Iron Man Back Into The MCU, But They Take It VERY Seriously

Are the Russo Brothers against bringing Iron Man back? Read on to find out!

I really appreciate the Russo Brothers. Yes, they fall clearly within the parameters of what the Marvel Cinematic Universe is capable of, but they bring a lot to the table. The stakes are rarely higher than they are in a Russo Brothers MCU movie. Sure, they’ve fallen into the same traps of fakeout deaths, but even in those instances, there are consequences. I’ve never left one of their movies and thought it was a complete waste of time. Nor have I felt like the stakes they set up in the film were a cop-out in some way.

It’s with that in mind that we move into the end of Avengers: Endgame. The film saw the death of two major players and the departure of another. One major character who sacrificed himself for the greater good was one Tony Stark, aka Iron Man. It’s a death we all kinda thought may happen, but weren’t entirely sure about. It was the MCU, after all. No one is truly dead, right?

Ever since the character’s demise, fans have all asked themselves one important question: Is Tony Stark going to stay dead? The poor dude can’t even rest in peace without fans contemplating when he’ll be returning. But it’s an important question. Because no one is truly dead in a comic book, one can only hope when it’s inevitable done, that it’s done right.

“I mean look, certainly we’ve always said this and we believe this about stakes have to be real, and if they’re not real, like the audience’s emotional investment in the moment and in those characters in the narrative is only…is contingent upon them feeling like there’s potential,” Anthony Russo said on the ReelBlend podcast.

“There’s something to be lost,” Russo continued. “So in all of our storytelling, even though those Marvel movies, a lot of the story was difficult, we wanted to commit very hard to that idea. So to answer your question, I think it would be in the context of that. It depends on how he was brought back. It depends on the storytelling, but it is certainly something that has to be earned. It’s certainly something that would shock and surprise audiences, so you can’t simply just bring him back. There would have to be a really compelling, innovative, unpredictable narrative event to find your way there in order for it to be worth it.”

Some fans may be sad to hear that the Russos would be open to the idea, but I disagree. While I would appreciate if Tony Stark was left in his iron coffin, I understand the way comics work. I like the fact that they understand the weight of making such a move. It isn’t something they could do in the same way as a Loki reappearance. They have to make sure the loss we felt in Avengers: Endgame isn’t undermined.

They’ve already done this before. Against my expectations, they made the “deaths” at the end of Infinity War matter. They let the characters live in that world for five years, and their absence was felt. They also made me feel like Gamora’s death wasn’t wasted or done haphazardly. She was actually killed, and the story we’ll be following forward isn’t the Gamora we knew.

In short, they’ve already managed to bring people back in a way that didn’t undermine their deaths. If they were to do it — or if Kevin Feige were to do it without them — I think they’d find some way. At the very least, they’re taking this s**t seriously.
