Finally! The movie talked about earlier this summer is out! The Tax Collector is a thriller, action film that takes you through a ride of what local Los Angeles gangs may be about.
This film stars actor David Soto (A Better Life), actor and filmmaker Shia LaBeouf (Honey Boy), actress Cinthya Carmona (East Los High), actor, comedian and producer George Lopez and actor, rapper Jose ‘Conejo’ Martin (Deputy).
No surprise to have filmmaker David Ayer as the writer and director of this production. Ayer is known to make gang and drug trade films using the City of Angels. He has been behind films like Training Day (2001), End of Watch (2012) and Suicide Squad (2016).

This film starts with David (Bobby Soto) and Creeper (Shia LaBeouf) as the ‘tax collectors’ for the crime lord, The Wizard. This duo go about with their day by making rounds collecting their cuts from the local gangs for their illicit dealings. However, everything shifts direction when The Wizards’ past rival, Conejo (Jose ‘Conejo’ Martin) leaves Mexico to take over Los Angeles. In this film he gets to use his stage name, ‘Conejo’ for his character which means Rabbit.
‘Conejo’ is a rapper from Los Angeles. He is CEO of Felony Case Records and has released several albums. His album, Fallen Angel included “Lets Ride” that was featured in the ‘The Shield’ TV produced by FX. I had the opportunity to interview Jose ‘Conejo’ Martin for his role via Zoom. He shared his experience working with Shia LaBeouf, how David Ayer allowed him to mold his character, add personality to ‘Conejo’ and use the practice of Afro-Caribbean religion in the film.
The Tax Collector available in theaters, drive-In theaters and VOD as of today, August 7th.
