After much speculation over the years, it looks like we are finally getting Gremlins 3 at WB, with the film out before Christmas, 2027. As per THR, original writer Chris Columbus is back to produce and direct. Steven Spielberg is once again an exec producer through his Amblin studio. Columbus scripted, but did not direct the original movie, that was Joe Dante. Though, if rumors are to be believed, Spielberg ghost directed a lot of the film himself.
As covered by THR, via Empire Online,
‘As reported by THR, the third Gremlins film will be produced and directed by Chris Columbus – who penned the original film for director Joe Dante. Steven Spielberg will be an executive producer too via Amblin. Columbus is coming off the back of his Netflix adaptation of The Thursday Murder Club, which was also an Amblin production. The script is being penned by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, who wrote Final Destination: Bloodlines. A date has been set for Gremlins 3, expected to arrive in cinemas (perhaps even crashing a screening of Snow White) from 19 November 2027.’

Zach Galligan has talked about various ideas he’s heard for a Gremlins 3 over the years. Therefore, I’d at least hope Billy is involved in some way, even if it’s a hand over of Gizmo to a new owner. However, I’d love to see Gilligan and Phoebe Cates back myself. Though, I’m not against their now grown kids being involved.
I have a feeling this will be a lukewarm nostalgia fest that plays like the first film. That’s just me going by how Hollywood tends to reboot franchises these days. It’s all memberberries and very little imagination, looking at you Ghostbusters: Afterlife. That first Gremlins was lightning in a bottle. Whilst the sequel wasn’t as good a film, it was at least very different from the first film.
Expect at least two of the three rules to owning a Mogwai to be broken come Holidays, 2027.
What do you think of the news we are finally getting Gremlins 3, around November 2027?
