WB Animation, Ava DuVernay Developing Wings Of Fire Animated Series

I had actually never heard of the Wings of Fire series from Venezuelan-American author Tui T. Sutherland up until two weeks ago. On a routine trip to our local book store, my niece picked out one of the Wings of Fire titles which she was apparently crazy about.

Well lucky for her and the rest of the Wings of Fire fans, Warner Bros. Animation today announced that they will be teaming up with writer, director, and producer Ava DuVernay to develop a high-end serialized animated family television series based on that book series.

According to the press release, Warner Bros. Animation won the bid for DuVernay in a highly competitive situation where there were multiple parties bidding for the rights. WBA will be producing the project with DuVernay. She, in turn, will also serve as executive producer through her ARRAY Filmworks production company. Dan Milano, Christa Starr, Sutherland and WBA’s Sam Register are also on board as executive producers.

Wings of Fire has been a #1 New York Times and USA Today best-selling book lists. It has over nine million copies available in print and available in sixteen different languages. This includes 15 novels, three graphic novels, and four short stories. The series follows an epic adventure that is set in a world that is entirely ruled by dragons. Across the two continents of Pyrrhia and Pantala the series explores vicious wars, enduring friendships and heroic quests that span generations of fascinating dragon characters.

Wings of Fire will be DuVernay’s first animated project as part of her exclusive overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group. She is currently also producing two scripted television series Queen Sugar and Cherish the Day. Also, she is working on the pilot for the DC property DMZ for HBO Max. Not to mention the New Gods film for Warner Bros. Pictures. When does she sleep???

As popular as Wings of Fire is with kids and as creative as DuVernay is I am excited to see what they put together. I know that in my house the kiddos will be glued to the television. With as many stories and books that are available, they have the opportunity to produce many seasons if it catches on with kids and maybe adults as well.
