Filoni and Favreau have finally answered a questions fans have had. Why Mando was in Boba Fett? Executive producers of The Book of Boba Fett, Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau are featured on the new Gallery for the making of The Book of Boba Fett. Via ComicBook, here is what the pair had to say about the reasons why Mando shows up so prominently in the Boba Fett show.
“At the very beginning, Jon [Favreau] and I look through all the season and, Jon has a bunch of things he wants to accomplish,” Filoni said. “We both like Mando, and we felt that it would be difficult for us to go a whole season without seeing him. And so, he’s a friend of Boba’s, so it makes sense to bring him back into the story.”
“Having The Book of Boba Fett come in the timeline and let everything settle, it allowed us to let some time pass, to take a breather, and meet The Mandalorian after he’d taken his helmet off and that The Child was no longer in his life,” Favreau said. “That father-child relationship that had developed was no longer there. And so his life, I think, would lose some of its meaning. That felt like fertile territory.”

Something Kyle Malone and I have spoke about on The Cantina when we were reviewing these episodes was that we felt like the entire point of Boba Fett was to get Grogu and Mando back together before The Mandalorian Season 3. I’m not necessarily hearing much different in these comments to counter that theory. I do therefore think in many ways the story of Fett himself felt like a late addition. Like it hadn’t been fully fleshed out enough to be engaging on it’s own. It’s rough when the best two episodes of a show do not feature the main characters whatsoever.
