Wonder Woman Breaks Record For Highest Domestic Opening Weekend For A Female Directed Film
Initial reports from Deadline is reporting that Patty Jenkins’s Wonder Woman has the opportunity to exceed $101 million dollars domestically this weekend. This still falls under other superhero origin films such as Deadpool ($132.4 million), Man of Steel ($116.6 million) and Spider-Man ($114.8 million). Overall, it ranks sixth in best domestic opening, and second best for Warner Bros. Pictures. In an earlier article we had talked about how box office numbers are down from the last few years, but thanks to Wonder Woman the numbers are only down -2.8% from last year with $4.75 billion.

Director Patty Jenkins did reach a very important benchmark. With these numbers she breaks the domestic opening record for a female directed film. Sam Taylor-Johnson held the title before with the film Fifty Shades of Grey, which brought in $85.1 million. Worldwide, Fifty Shades of Grey is still on top with $242 million with Wonder Woman in second with $223 million. It seems that the majority of fans, and critics, agree that Wonder Woman is a hit, even Rotten Tomatoes have given it it’s “Certified Fresh” stamp with a rating of 93%. All the the positive chatter about the film gives Warner Bros. Pictures confidence that it will have staying power for weeks to come. We’ll see how it does next week with the opening of Universal Pictures’ The Mummy, which will be the start of their Dark Universe.
Wonder Woman, in my opinion, has the kind of story telling that super hero films are missing. It seems like most super hero films are too busy trying to set up a future film, or character, instead of focusing on the plot and character at hand. Wonder Woman takes the time to develop Diana Prince’s character from child to hero. If you have had the opportunity to see the film, what did you think? Does this give you renewed hope for the DCEU? Chime in below!
Wonder Woman is now playing in theaters everywhere.
