X-Men Producer Has A Warning For Kevin Feige

We are currently living through one hell of an era for geek culture. Nowadays, the things that kids were made fun of for liking, like comic books, Star Wars, and fantasy, are all pretty damn mainstream. Big blockbuster movies are not a huge staple of this generation’s film diet, and Marvel Studios is at least a little responsible for that trend.

Now, with Disney acquiring most of Fox, Marvel Studios will have access to Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and countless other characters that have been out of their reach for many years. With the MCU heading into Phase 4, they will have more heroes at their disposal than ever before. But X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner, had a warning for Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige:

“The problem is you can’t have too many Marvel, X-Men superhero movies out there because we will cancel each other out. Each one has to be distinctive and yet you’ve got The Avengers to follow through. You’ve got so many distinctive story canons to follow through and yet we want new ones, but I don’t think you can have more than four. Four is a lot because people are going to get sick of them so we have to be careful. [Kevin Feige] has to be careful.”

Well, she ain’t exactly wrong (though one could argue that between Iron Man, Thor, Spider-Man, Captain America, The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Doctor Strange, they’ve already long since passed up Donner’s “four distinctive story canons,” so it may make her point moot). For years, that’s been one big question mark in the industry: will fans ultimately get bored of these films? The easy answer is “yes, of course,” but Marvel Studios has done a bang-up job so far of making these movies very different from one another in terms of genre. If they continue that with their use of X-Men, perhaps it’s not impossible to make it work.
