Ready for some Darkseid action in Justice League?
It’s hard to forget the ambition Zack Snyder had for his DC Extended Universe. Prior to the release of Justice League, we knew it would be one part of a bigger story. Snyder himself hinted at the idea that the film would end with Darkseid making his first appearance as the main big bad of the first multi-film arc. Sadly, when Justice League hit, all we got was a bland-ass Steppenwolf as the main baddie, with no Darkseid in sight. But, of course, we know better.
Even just prior to the production of Justice League, it was clear Warner Bros. was getting cold feet. Batman v Superman had just come out, and it wasn’t received nearly as well as they had hoped. Reports at the time indicated that they were rewriting the script as they went, reshooting scenes along the way so it could be better received. The following year, after Snyder stepped away from the project due to a family tragedy, Warner Bros. went full-force into clean-up mode. The result was a lackluster, watered-down film. Sure, I found it to be a fun ride, but it felt more like a Saturday morning cartoon than an ambitious story like its predecessor. And Darkseid was nowhere to be seen.
In the years since then, Snyder has teased plenty of unfulfilled story points, scenes, and characters. Among them was Darkseid himself. We’ve seen a black-and-white concept image of him in the past. On the day HBO Max officially launched, Snyder took to Twitter to share a full-color image of the baddie. Of course, Snyder teased Darkseid as a character we’ll be seeing on the brand-new streaming platform.

“He’s coming… to HBO Max,” he wrote, along with the following image.

The image in question is a familiar one. As I mentioned before, it was posted on Vero in June of last year — except as a black-and-white image. It shows the villain flanked by his Apokolips troops, and it’s in glorious color. It more closely resembles what we could likely expect to see in the final movie.
I have to say, he looks pretty slick. A lot of folks like to poke at the idea that fans won’t like Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but as someone who appreciated Batman v Superman, I have cautious optimism.
