From Gods to Cyborgs? Thor Director talks Terminator

terminatorThe Film School Rejects have spoken to Alan Taylor, director of “Thor: The Dark World” and “Game of Thrones” alum, about the proposed fourth sequel in the Terminator franchise. Word on the street is that Taylor is now attached to direct the film since Justin Lin (Fast and Furious) dropped out quite some time ago, but Taylor is not confirming or denying the rumors. What he is doing, though, is talking about the film- which should only add more fuel to the flames.

In his chat with the Rejects, he eludes to the fact that he would approach it much like he did “Thor,” where the sequel has a much different tone than first- similar to the first two Terminator films:

“The funny thing is, those two films could not be more different than each other. The first one was more of a low-budget horror movie, while the second one was more an amazingly well-produced, glossy thriller with a sci-fi concept. They were both so successful, so there’s certain things you learn from them. If you’re going to try and enter the franchise, you better try to come in at that level. Also, it’s a challenging thing, because what they have in mind is a reboot but not an entirely different way of thinking. “

Taylor even cited “His Highness” Chris Nolan, in a conversation with /Film:

“We all love the first two and I actually went back and watched them again and my respect level only went up. I think there is another famous franchise that had a wonderful beginning and then turned a little bananas….Tim Burton’s first Batman is just glorious and by the time it got around to nipples on costumes and all that stuff it sort of lost its way. And for [Christopher] Nolan to come in an say ‘I respect this material so much I’m going to take it up to *here,* that’s a great inspiration.’ I think any version, whoever is directing Terminator, would be very respectful and serve the first two and probably feel a bit more freedom by the end.”

So what do we think? Its long been rumored that Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, and Michael Beihn would all return for “Terminator 5.” Do you think Taylor would be the man for the job? It seems he’d be keen to retcon the last two films and focus more on following up the first two. Does that sit well with you? And, lastly, would you want him to come in and do his own thing or try to build off Cameron’s work?
