Several months ago, it was rumored that Willem Dafoe would be playing the role of an Atlantean in DC and Warner Bros.’ upcoming film, Justice League. In June, the folks over at Screen Rant confirmed the speculation, and revealed that he would be playing the character Nuidis Vulko, an advisor to Arthur Curry (a.k.a. Aquaman). Of course, like pretty much every comic book character under the sun, he doesn’t have a static role, and over time has various goals and allegiances over his history.

With that in mind, it was assume that while he’d have a role in JusticeLeague, it would mainly be used as a setup for his character in Aquaman — sort of how they’re doing it for J.K. Simmons’ Commissioner Gordon. Of course, like a lot of news stories that tumble out of the movie blogosphere, it was never really confirmed that he would return. For all we know, his role in Justice League could have been minimized and reduced to a minor character death. There’s no way WB would have wasted a talent like Dafoe, but you never know.

Now, thanks to an interview with The Guardian, Dafoe has now confirmed that not only will he return to the Aquaman film, but that he will have a “principal role” in the flick.

“Well, Justice League is very particular because it’s an ensemble movie and my character is being introduced here in order to be a principal role in Aquaman. These films are a different experience. They have different responsibilities, different resources and different intentions. It’s nice to go between those worlds if you can. They serve different impulses.”

I don’t think you’re going to get anyone complaining about Dafoe having a large role in the flick. Not only is he an amazing actor, but he also have his ties to another big comic book franchise: Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. Times have changed since then, but I look forward to seeing what Dafoe can bring to another comic book character in Aquaman.
