Casting over at Marvel seems to be harder and harder to hide these days. Just short of a month ago, THR reported the inside scoop that CREED and FRUITVALE STATION actor Michael B. Jordan would be joining Chadwick Boseman in the standalone BLACK PANTHER film from Marvel. While the rumor was pretty much accepted as fact at the time, today, we have our first actual confirmation from a party involved.
In an interview with THR while at Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, Jordan expressed his excitement at jumping on board the flick.
“I’m super excited, especially to put a different spin on it. I’m looking forward to working with Ryan [Coogler] once again. It’s gonna be a good time.â€
Jordan also said he was looking forward to working with Lupita Nyong’o and Chadwick Boseman, essentially confirming the actress’ involvement in the picture as well (who was also rumored to be joining the film).
BLACK PANTHER will mark the third collaboration between director Ryan Coogler and Jordan, and the second comic book film from the actor. Last year, Jordan took on the role of the Human Torch in the FANTASTIC FOUR remake. While the future of that particular franchise is unclear at the moment (the filmmakers have expressed some interest at continuing the story with the same cast, despite the film’s failure at the box office), there is no reason to believe that Jordan’s role in BLACK PANTHER would affect his involvement in any future Fox-led FANTASTIC FOUR outings. While we like the idea of actors having allegiances to certain franchises, that mindset likely wouldn’t work for an actor.
Nyong’o’s involvement in BLACK PANTHER only furthers her continued relationship with Disney, following her successful parts in both STAR WARS and THE JUNGLE BOOK. With BLACK PANTHER under belt, she’ll have been involved in most divisions of Disney’s large theatrical blockbusters. All she’ll need is to play a voice in a Walt Disney Animated film and a Pixar film, and she’ll be set for life.
There’s no word yet on who Jordan will play specifically, but word has it that it will be in a villainous role. As far as Lupita Nyong’o goes, all roads seem to be pointing towards a love interest for T’Challa, but we’ll have to wait and see.
BLACK PANTHER hits theaters on July 6, 2018.
