FANTASTIC BEASTS: Zoë Kravitz’s Leta Estrange Will Have A Bigger Role In The Sequel

While you didn’t necessarily have to be familiar with any of the Harry Potter lore to get a kick out of the recently-released Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, that extra dose of knowledge will certainly be helpful for picking up some of the Easter eggs and references scattered about the film. Not all of them had any real significance, and the ones that did have significance didn’t even lean on any Harry Potter lore for their importance to be established.

One such Easter egg came in the form of Leta Lestrange. Actress Zoë Kravitz was confirmed to be playing a mysterious role in Fantastic Beasts earlier this year, and those who saw the movie only caught the slightest of glimpses of her in a photo that Newt Scamander kept in his suitcase. More interesting was the fact that she was revealed as Leta Lestrange, and from the looks of if, she had had a relationship with Newt at some point.

Lestrange is sort of the big red flag in her name. Potterheads will immediately recognize the name and its connection to Bellatrix Lestrange, Death Eater (and recently-revealed lover) of Lord Voldemort. The jury is still out as to whether or not Leta will also contain that psycho-gene that so plagued Bellatrix, but it’s an interesting connection to make, and I can only imagine that link could be explored down the line. But, in a world of shared universes, it’s not always clear who will play a role in the next film. For all we know, screenwriter J.K. Rowling could be saving Leta for film four of the franchise.

Fans need not worry. In a recent roundtable, Fantastic Beasts director David Yates confirmed that Leta will indeed have a much bigger role to play in the next film (via Cinema Blend):

“Yes. Leta Lestrange comes into the second movie. She’s quite complicated and damaged and confused and Newt is absolutely still in love with her, so she has a kind of power over him, and she, yeah, she’s a kind of tragic figure, so we will see a bit more of her in the second movie.”

Indeed, one of the criticisms I had of the film was in its reserved nature. While there was some fun stuff going on in the flick, I couldn’t shake the feeling that they were holding back on us, saving all the actual development for future films. Hopefully with this next installment, which will include more emotional material to mine, I’ll walk away a bit more fulfilled.
