Lucasfilm certainly has their work cut out for them in terms of the upcoming Han Solo spinoff. Of course, each of the Star Wars films comes with its own set of problems, but with Han Solo, it’s the first movie where audience expectations of a specific character can actively work against them. For decades now, the only Han Solo any of us have ever seen has been Harrison Ford.
Those are some big shoes to fill. Not only do you have to compete with the first take on a character, but you also can't be too distracted by the fact that we already saw this young version of the character, and he looked NOTHING like Alden Ehrenreich, the actor who is set to play him in the upcoming film. Needless to say, there are a lot of expectations that need to be met from a visual standpoint. Will he look enough like Harrison Ford that audiences can overlook the fact that he’s NOT Harrison Ford?
That remains to be seen, and while Disney has yet to release an official photo, TMZ has managed to snag a set photo of Ehrenreich as the smuggler.
Check it out below:
As someone who’s been incredibly wary about this movie from day one, I have to say, I’m encouraged by this first look. No, it doesn’t look like Harrison Ford. Not at all. But in order for audiences to buy Ehrenreich’s portrayal, it needs to be seen as its own thing, not a simple imitation of what’s come before. Were they to go that route, audiences would constantly be distracted by the fact that this is pretty much just NOT Harrison Ford. In all honesty, this photo makes the actor look a great deal more like Sebastian Stan (the Winter Soldier) than Harrison Ford.
Either way, I’m getting more and more excited to see how this portrayal turns out. Now that I know they won’t be slavish to the original look of Han, but rather the spirit, I’m looking forward to what else the filmmakers and actor will bring to the table. Could it be possible that we’ll get an interpretation that could outshine Harrison Ford? Probably not…but you never know.
