SPOILERS ahead for Stranger Things 2‘s finale. Finish the whole season before you read this. You’ve been warned!

Stranger Things 2 dropped on Netflix just this past Friday, and yes, I finished it Saturday.

Though the season ends at the Hawkins Middle School Snowball Dance, and there are good vibes all around, at the very tail end we see the Mind Flayer, still in the Upside Down, standing over Upside Down Hawkins Middle School as if he is watching over someone at the dance, if not all our heroes. Co-creators Ross and Matt Duffer discussed the ending with Screen Rant:

“Yeah, we don’t end it on a totally happy note, do we? [Laughs] There were discussions about that, but then we went, ‘Nah, we have to hint at what’s to come.’ The hope we wanted people to get out of it is that this thing [is still out there]. They’ve shut the door on the Mind Flayer, but not only is it still there in the Upside Down, it’s very much aware of the kids, and particularly Eleven. It had not encountered her and her powers until that final episode. Now, it knows that she’s out there. We wanted to end on a little bit of an ominous note on that level.”

The Duffers brothers went on to explain that they choose this ending as a warning of what’s to come, instead of the multiple cliffhangers left at the end of the first season:

“Last year, we had a lot of little cliffhangers at the end of the season. We didn’t want to do that again. We didn’t want to box ourselves in for season three. We wanted to be able to start season three on a very clean slate. It felt totally unnecessary, when we had the Snow Ball. Once we had the Snow Ball, we didn’t know [if we wanted to do] anything else as an ending.”

There is no word on when the inhabitants of Hawkins will again fight for their lives again against Demogogrons, the Mind Flayer, and Demodogs, and whatever else the Upside Down will produce, but hopefully we will be seeing everyone again in 2018.

I enjoyed season 2. I like that the gov wasnt evil like last time. I liked that there was a big bad controling everything this time.

i wasn’t overly impressed with the 2nd season. thats not to say i didn’t like it. in the first few chapters the “nostalgia” schtick felt forced…almost as if the 80s references were written in just for the sake of having them. in ’84 i was 11 yrs old and NOBODY back then had halloween costumes that ornate and detailed…and no one would have dressed up as jason- with hockey mask- or michael myers either…in 1984 they had not yet reached pop culture icon status. and on DIG DUG the arcade game…you can only use 3 letters when your a high scorer, so spelling out MADMAX would have been impossible.

I liked season 2 and look forward to the next one. I still remember the 80s very well and I liked how they quoted and honored the movies, games, music, and culture of this decade. Well done. They had some problems with the story, though. Some of the plot holes were just too big to not scratch your head.
