The Fast and Furious franchise has had a storied existence. What started out as a drama involving a cop getting in too deep turned into a ridiculous, over-the-top, superhero franchise with almost as many explosions as your average Transformers flick (okay, maybe not almost as many). Like any good TV series, the Fast and Furious series has taken some time to find its sea legs, and when the fourth film hit, it seemed clear that they knew which direction they needed to be heading in.

Now, several years later, we find ourselves a couple short months from the release of The Fate of the Furious, the eighth film in the series. In spite of original lead Paul Walker’s tragic death a few years back, the gang is still moving forward in style. This time around, however, they’re short one more man in the form of Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto.

On Thursday, Universal released a new international trailer for the film, and despite its relatively short length, it does a great job of selling the film.

Check it out below:

As you can see, it looks as though a woman from Dom’s past (played by Charlize Theron) has something on him — enough to make him turn on his family. Our only hope is that this doesn’t turn into some silly hypnotism or brainwashing deal. That would skew a bit too close to annoying and stupid cliché.

The official synopsis for The Fate of the Furious is below:

“Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game—and the rest of the crew has been exonerated—the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life.  But when a mysterious woman (Oscar winner Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.

“From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.”

For The Fate of the Furious, Vin Diesel is joined by a returning all-star cast that includes Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky and Kurt Russell.  In addition to Theron, the series welcomes newcomers Scott Eastwood and Oscar winner Helen Mirren.  The film is directed by F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) and produced by returning producers Neal H. Moritz, Michael Fottrell and Diesel.
