I’m fairly confident that many films out there already called this. Over the past few years, Taron Egerton’s acting career has been criss-crossing with Sir Elton John’s, and it seemed inevitable that, before long, he’d be portraying the iconic musical artist on the big screen.
Back in 2016’s animated film, Sing, Egerton played a gorilla character whose show-stopping number was a rendition of John’s classic song “I’m Still Standing,” and just last year, Egerton starred alongside John in the action-comedy film Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Sure, the movie may have been a bit disappointing, when all said and done, but with them acting together, the writing seemed to be on the wall.
Now, Deadline has confirmed that Paramount has closed a deal to fund and distribute Rocketman, a biopic chronicling John’s life. On board to play John himself is none other than Egerton, who has proven his acting prowess and his ability to actually sing. Directing the film is Dexter Fletcher, who recently directed Egerton in the feel-good sports film, Eddie the Eagle.
While Fletcher may not be the most conventional choice for this, I think he has it in him to make a really fun biopic. Plus, we can’t forget that he’s currently also working on the Freddie Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody (he took over for Bryan Singer when his deal with Fox, following his sex scandal).
