When’s the last time we’ve had a really solid kid’s fantasy? Sure, we have plenty of fun little movies like Goosebumps, but not since the Harry Potter movies hit do I think we’ve had something that hits that middle grade demographic as well as this. I’m talking about The Kid Who Would Be King, the latest film from Joe Cornish, the man behind Attack the Block and one of the co-writers of films like Adventures of Tintin and Ant-Man.
Now, we are getting a trailer for the film, and it looks like it’s a whole lot of fun. Of course, given its title, it goes without saying that kids are the target demographic for this thing, but I think the movie does a good job of being a fun wish-fulfillment story without being a cheeseball of a mess. The young cast seems talented (including the son of Andy Serkis), the script seems engaging and funny, and the effects look solid for what it is.

I’d take this over the already-solid Goosebumps any day of the week.
Below is the official synopsis for The Kid Who Would Be King:
“Old school magic meets the modern world in the epic adventure THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING. Alex (Ashbourne Serkis) thinks he’s just another nobody, until he stumbles upon the mythical Sword in the Stone, Excalibur. Now, he must unite his friends and enemies into a band of knights and, together with the legendary wizard Merlin (Stewart), take on the wicked enchantress Morgana (Ferguson). With the future at stake, Alex must become the great leader he never dreamed he could be.”
