Alien 5. Wow, it’s been a long time since we’ve mentioned that one, eh? News of this potential sequel began to gain momentum several years back, but it evaporated into thin air all too soon after it became clear that Ridley Scott was interested in pursuing the Prometheus sequel Alien: Covenant.
This came after both Elysium and Chappie failed to garner critical and financial success, and with Scott taking a newfound interest in his old franchise, it seemed to make sense that they would go their separate ways. But does that mean we’d NEVER get a chance to see Alien 5? Alien franchise star Sigourney Weaver was asked that very question by THR, and here was her response.
“We almost started to do it when I was working with James Cameron. But by the time we were put off by Fox, Neill had gotten so many jobs that we’d have to wait probably. I’m busy doing Avatar 4 and 5. I love working with Neill and I think he’d do a terrific job, and James Cameron really thinks it’s a great idea, so you never know. Right now, I think Neill’s got like three projects going at once.”

While Blomkamp hasn’t done any features since Chappie, he has done a lot of great work through his Oats Studios banner, which showcases high concept, experimental sci-fi ideas. His next big project is set to be a new entry in the RoboCop series, though, and I’ll bet that the success or failure of that one will ultimately affect whether or not Alien 5 will happen — if that franchise has any steam left in it.
