If you’ve been remotely following DC news or superhero news in general, chances are you know that there’s a standalone Joker-centric movie on the way starring Joaquin Phoenix. Directed by Todd Phillips, this was pitched to audiences as a gritty crime thriller from day one, and its inspiration of Martin Scorsese movies of the ‘80s seemed to solidify one thing: that it would likely be rated R.
Now, it’s been confirmed by the official Joker website that the film has been officially rated R, surprising no one. Though while it may be surprising to no one, it may be relieving to those who worried Warner Bros. would try to step in at the last moment at take control á la Suicide Squad.

As far as the reason for the film’s rating, it looks like it will feature “Strong bloody violence, disturbing behavior, language and brief sexual images.” Again, none of this is a surprise, and pretty much all of it seemed evident based on the trailer that we saw months ago.
