Cold Brook Review: William Fichtner’s Directorial Effort Has A Warm Center

There are still serious filmmakers out there, making serious films, that will seriously make you cry, and more than that you will reflect on what it means to be a human being. Recently I had the chance to watch Cold Brook. The film marks the directorial debut of  William Fichtner.

Fichtner is a long-time character actor, and you may recall him from stealing the show during the Dark Knight’s famous opening bank robbery scene. If you need a refresher, Fichtner is the bank manager shouting to the Joker and toting a shotgun.

Cold Brook marks the directorial debut for Fichtner. The story is set in a piece of American suburbia that would make the elder Clint Eastwood smile. It’s a picturesque sort of town, where everybody sort of knows your name. Though a slow burner, the film is truly evocative at moments as it soars to emotional heights. There are times watching Cold Brook where I was beginning to feel frustrated by the pacing. Now on to the plot.

The story follows a very simple plot. As follows – “Two ordinary guys embark on an extraordinary adventure and risk everything for a stranger in need.” Not much to offer, but that’s just on the surface. I will say that I had to remind myself that some journeys make since at the end, when you reflect on what you’ve seen, and why you’re wiping tears from your eyes. It’s then that you can see the joy. Cold Brook is a movie that is truly joyous but only in hindsight. At times the plot plods but it keeps clunking on until that magical moment happens and it fires on all cylinders and finally plants its flag deep in drama territory.

Cold Brook impressed me. It’s a well shot, no frills supernatural story. What more can I say? I would recommend it to anyone looking to clean their cinematic palette many of the paint by numbers blockbusters. What can I say, folks? The movie is a folk movie of the best kind. If this is Fichtner’s debut, then I look forward to seeing more of the movie magic up his sleeve.

FINAL GRADE: B
