Well, here’s something that will make a bit of film history. Indiana Jones is a franchise that famously grew from the minds of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg — two undeniable film legends. Even Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull had the involvement of the two titans, with Spielberg directing and Lucas working on the story. Now, it looks like neither will be fully involved creatively in Indiana Jones 5.
While George Lucas is still set to be executive producer, his role in the story isn’t clear. And Steven Spielberg? Well, it turns out he won’t be directing it after all, as Variety reports. According to the outlet, Spielberg is officially passing on the reins to someone else. But who can it be?
It’s not a done deal yet, but sources say James Mangold could be taking over. Of course, Mangold is well known for his work on The Wolverine and Logan, but he most recently helmed the Oscar contender Ford v Ferrari.

So, what does this mean for Spielberg? Is he riding off into the sunset? not quite. From the sound of it, he will still be a hands-on producer, so perhaps that Indy flavor will still be retained in some way. Maybe it can be similar to how James Cameron worked with Tim Miller on Terminator: Dark Fate — but hopefully with better box office results.
As far as the reason for Spielberg’s departure, it was reportedly the filmmaking legend’s decision. He apparently wanted to allow another director to bring his fresh perspective. Personally, I think this is a great idea. While I don’t hate Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, I do think it suffered a huge film crime: it was kinda boring. If you get someone else to take over, you may be able to help prevent that stagnation from festering.
But what do you think? Are you sad to see Spielberg go, and is Mangold the right choice? Let us know your thoughts down below!
