The Russo brothers have clearly cemented their place in the film industry. Their role in the Marvel franchise is seen by many as being unparalleled. With that said, if they give another film, director, etc. the seal of approval, you know it has some credibility. Collider was able to have hold an interview with the brothers regarding their involvement with Netflix’s Mosul containing an all-Arabic cast. Near the end of the interview the Russo brothers provide their opinion regarding WW84 releasing in theaters as well as HBO Max.
If you fast forward to the 10:21 mark, the Russo brothers are asked about WW84. (I would recommend watching the entire interview). When WB announced that WW84 would in fact be hitting theaters as well as HBO Max many found it interesting. However, others thought it could be a gamble. Seeing how Tenet did not pull strong profit here in the states, keeping the Christmas release date was something others in the film industry were watching with a close eye. The announcement of the cinematic and digital release definitely raised some eyebrows.
The brothers brought a fresh perspective on the situation regarding the cinematic/digital format. Reaching a wider range of audience is their primary claim. Whether it is due to physically not being able to go to a theater, or financially, the digital format offers another option to expand the audience. They also spoke of how not having to focus on the success of having an opening weekend takes some pressure off. The Russo’s also suggest that there are major issues with focusing so much on opening weekends defining the success of a film.

The Russo brothers see this as the future of the film industry. Combining a cinematic and digital release, especially during this time, could definitely bring success. Honestly, if the Russo brothers are in favor of the move, then who am I to doubt it, right? Are you sold on the cinematic/digital release of WW84? Could it be the leader in major changes to the industry? If you weren’t sure before, does the approval from the Russo brothers change your mind?
