Just when you think Warner Bros. couldn’t look any more ridiculous, reports have surfaced that the Batgirl feature film, has been killed at the studio. This was first reported by The New York Post, then later confirmed by Variety. The live-action adaptation of the popular DC Comics character will not premiere on any platform. Neither theatrically nor on HBO Max.

Batgirl was to star Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl. It was directed by Adil El Aribi and Bilall Fallah. They are the filmmakers behind Bad Boys for Life and Marvel Studios’ Ms. Marvel. It was originally created to add feature films to the growing HBO Max platform. All of this of course before they were bought out by Discovery.  Now known as Warner Bros. Discovery, they have decided that the film does not fit in their plans. So despite it already having completed its photography and now in post-production, they have decided to scrap it.

Insiders at the studios are saying that the decision to drop Batgirl was not caused by the quality of the film, nor the commitment of anyone involved. Rather the decision for the studio’s slate of DC features to be at a blockbuster scale. This film had only been budgeted to screen on HBO Max, and not for a major global release. The budget had reached $90 million.

This news comes only days after Marvel Studios announced a well-developed plan at San Diego Comic-Con for television and theatrical release. With Warner Bros. only showcasing features we already knew about. Not to mention their current conundrum of what to do with The Flash. That film has been plagued with the fact that the star Ezra Miller can’t keep his act together. Not to mention the outcry to cut out Amber Heard from the upcoming Aquaman sequel, who also had her own run of trouble.

Batgirl was going to feature a well-known cast along with Grace that included J.K. Simmons reprising his role as Commissioner Jim Gordan. As well as the return of Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne aka Batman. The villain, Firefly, was going to be played by Brendan Fraiser. Word is that filming went so well that there were even hints of a possible conversation about a sequel.

At this point, we should all not hold our breaths for any kind of comprehensive DC slate for our favorite superheroes. Maybe they will be featured on the Food Network with Bobby Flay or something.
