Paddington in Peru is the continuing story of the Brown family and their unexpected adventures. Paddington (Ben Whishaw)—the only Brown family member who also happens to be a bear—receives a letter concerning his Aunt Lucy (Imelda Staunton). Aunt Lucy has been staying at a home for retired bears in Peru. The caregiver of the institution, Reverend Mother (Olivia Coleman) has grown concerned that Aunt Lucy has become despondent and lonely. She urges Paddington to come visit in the hopes of buoying her spirits. Concurrently, Mary Brown (Emily Mortimer) the matriarch feels as though the whole family could use a bonding experience to spend more time together. Along with Henry Brown (Hugh Bonneville) and the rest of the gang, the clan departs for Peru and quickly becomes swept up in a mysterious quest.
What works in Paddington in Peru is the levity, humor, and heart. Sincere family-friendly comedies feel a bit rarer these days. But this third entry in the franchise continues the trend of producing the cinematic equivalent of a warm blanket. Directed by first-timer Dougal Wilson, Paddington in Peru is light, silly, and full of touching messages. Audiences of all ages should find something to smile and grin at. Whether it’s the over-the-top villainous performances, cheeky references, or Paddington’s slapstick antics, there’s a bit of joy for all. This is thanks mostly to the fantastic ensemble of performers who fully embrace the playful tone that drives the antics forward.

People in the mood for a film with more mature themes may opt for something other than Paddington in Peru. This is a movie that purposely positions itself as being appropriate for little kids through grandparents. This means that the twists and turns are obvious. Danger is merely an illusion. Convenience drives the plot. And so forth. Everyone involved in Paddington in Peru is trying to entertain through the gentlest, most polite manner. For those not amused by such fare, the proceedings could feel boring or eyeroll-inducing.
Paddington in Peru is literally a children’s book come to life. Paddington and the Browns ooze charm through their unending optimism and kindness.
