Folks, here’s my Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 1 review and it was as good a start as you can expect from a premiere episode. I know there are a ton of press reviews covering the first five episodes. However, I’m watching weekly as it drops over here in the U.K. so I’ll call it as I see it. I am aware that the consensus is that Season 2 so far isn’t as good as Season 1, but I’m not there yet. Oh, this is a SPOILER FREE review by the way.
As for Episode 1, I think for a premiere episode it does exactly what it needs to. We catch up with the main characters from Season 1 and we find out how things have gone for them since we last met. As one might expect, despite Chris and the team saving the world in Season 1, it’s not going well. We also, in the context of this rough spell for everyone, get introduced to the main plot device of Season 2.
I’m sure you’ve likely seen the trailers, so I don’t think I’m spoiling anything by mentioning the alternate world Chris finds. The stage is I guess set by Chris’s longing for something more than he has. What he finds in this alt-world seems like the perfect life. However, there is of course another Chris there, which is awkward.
I won’t get into what happens at the end of the episode, but it sets the scene for the drama to come.
Good
As I said, the plot was what it needed to be, we catch up with old friends and find out where they are now. We also get a sense of what state this world is in now, with even some Superman references. I also quite enjoyed the retconned ending of Season 1, which better establishes this as a DCU story. Effectively, making The Suicide Squad the first DCU movie.
I like the characters in general, but equally there wasn’t much to sink our teeth into yet.
I like the way certain character arc’s seem to be heading and it was pretty fun.
The Meh
Didn’t dislike it, but I don’t think the opening dance number is as strong as that of Season 1. That’s no big deal to me overall though.
Some of the comedy moments made me smile, but so far not quite on the level of Season 1. That being said, it’s the first episode, so perhaps it takes time to get going.
Bad?
Yeah, I have one bad. The sex party scene was for me just too much, for too long, and far too graphic. It really just was a tad too explicit for me, that it bordered on soft porn. I’m no white knight, I have no issues with mature content, but it has to serve a purpose. The purpose of the sex party seemed to be to shock the audience and remind us this is for adults… No shit.
Thematically the idea was fine, I just felt some cleverer camera angles and better shot choices would provide the same effect. Sometimes, less is more, not always, but quite often. I guess the best word I can find to describe it is, inordinate.

Overall, as said up top, this is a perfectly serviceable premiere episode and leads us into Episode 2 well. I could maybe have done with just a bit less fake sexual grinding in the scene critiqued above.
I’ll be back next week to review Episode 2 of Season 2, but for now.
GRADE: B
Solid B, I’m happy, I enjoyed it and had really one minor gripe with the episode. Episode 1 has got me looking forwards to watching Episode 2. Therefore, it has done it’s job well.
What do you think, and what do you think of my review for Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 1? Thoughts below as always.
