According to a new report Warner Bros./Discovery have basically put themselves up for sale, presumably to the highest bidder. It was only recently that Paramount began an attempted purchase of WB/D. However, the word from WB/D at that time was that they rebuffed any offers and didn’t want to sell to Paramount.
Here what NBC reports,
‘Warner Bros. Discovery, the owner of HBO, CNN and other streaming and studio businesses, said Tuesday it is putting itself up for sale.’
‘In a press release, the company announced “a review of strategic alternatives to maximize shareholder value,” which is Wall Street speak for a sale. Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) said it had recently received “unsolicited interest” from “multiple parties for both the entire company and Warner Bros.” alone.’
‘The company said that while it shops itself around, it will continue to work on the previously announced split of its cable networks from its streaming and studio businesses.’
‘Warner Bros. Discovery shares surged on the news, rising more than 10%.’
You’ve really got to wonder why Discovery wanted in with WB in the first place? It would be far easier to sell these companies separately surely than as one giant sale? Maybe that is the plan? I could definitely see various interested parties looking at those individual assets, like the movie studio itself.

The company has value of at least $45B and any sale would likely be way beyond that and include some debt. So far there are rumors that Paramount, Comcast/NBCUniversal and Netflix are interested. However, there could be others that have the cashflow to pull this deal off, like Apple for example. Now the company has the for sale sign displayed, anything could happen?
I won’t get into what this could mean for the DCU, or the Harry Potter TV series or anything. Truth is, that would completely depend on the new owners and what they feel like doing. Both of the IP’s will be a big part of the value on offer, but that could also come with new ideas. It could be the likes of Harry Potter has a commitment built in who knows? Though, I doubt they’d continue with all eight seasons if it’s a complete flop. Therefore, I’d guess that’s as vulnerable as anything else is.
Dark times lie ahead Harry… I always like that quote, though it may not be relevant here. I’d assume anyone buying WB/D would absolutley love to have a hit Harry Potter TV show for a new generation. As for the DCU, it would be a bit silly to can it and start again. However, perhaps a new owner would wish more control, which could force out someone like James Gunn. It’s all up in the air until a deal happens, and even then it’ll take ages to all be finalised.
Let us know what you think as Warner Bros./Discovery is now up for sale?
