Some ‘80s treasures should be left in the past. But the Goonies never say die. Not when Hollywood sees money in legacy sequels. Now, The Goonies 2 is finally moving forward just 40 years after the original hit cinemas.
During the promotional tour for Zootopia 2, Ke Huy Quan, who played Data in the 1985 Steven Spielberg production directed by the late Richard Donner, gave an optimistic update to ComicBook.com on where things stand with the long-awaited sequel.
“I first heard about it when I saw Steven Spielberg at an event, and he was so excited. We try to do it, so let’s manifest it. I know we’ve been trying for the last 40 years, but I feel quite good about it.”

“This time, Chris Columbus and Spielberg are developing it, we have an incredible writer. I mean, I read he turned in the second draft and they’re really happy about it. I was telling Fortune (Feimster, Zootopia 2 co-star), I said we’re gonna do it. I want her to be in it. I would love to revisit that character and go on another adventure with my Goonies brothers and sisters.”
The original Goonies cast had previously reunited for Josh Gad’s Reunited Apart special in 2020 while Donner was still alive. Donner, Spielberg, and original screenwriter Columbus all agreed that the challenge in making a sequel now is finding the right hook to bring back the characters as adults long after they discovered One-Eyed Willy’s treasure. Potsy Ponciroli (Old Henry) is writing the screenplay, which he told Deadline in August that it’s on the right track.
“I know there’s a lot of ‘Do we need a new Goonies?’ But I’m the biggest fan of the original, it’s my favorite movie of all time. I’d never ‘redo’ The Goonies. To me it was a story that never ended, so this is the movie I want to see as one of its biggest fans.”
“I have turned in a first draft, which was very well received, and I’m on a second draft and I’m about 95% done with that so we’re moving in the right direction.”

As a longtime fan of the original, I remain skeptical about this one. Based on all the behind-the-scenes stories told over the years, The Goonies was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the cast. Recapturing the magic of innocence and wonder in today’s times is a challenge I’m not sure this sequel can do. Additionally, the loss of Donner makes it difficult for the cast to attach to a new director.
