Lucasfilm Games say they’re exploring new Star Wars games that will surprise the fans in a recent interview. I’ll say up front that what would surprise me most is actually publishing some of these games and them being decent. I think that’s a struggle with as big an IP as Star Wars, but I’ll get to that.

The Games Business spoke to Lucasfilm Games vice president Douglas Reilly, as per the video below.

“I think we’ve tried to be more flexible about like who we’re willing to take pitches from and good ideas can come from a lot of different places. You don’t have to necessarily be a top five publisher to make a great Star Wars game. We have a high quality bar and we want to make sure there excellent experiences and that means typically you work with more experienced teams than, you know, new teams who have no track record of of making great things.

We’re exploring all kinds of things that large and small with partners that I think are going to continue to surprise folks who are like, ‘Oh, they’re doing a thing with them. That might be interesting to see how that turns out.’”

It is tricky I think for an independent IP such as Star Wars to find the right developers. Most studios devs are far more focused on their own IP’s than they are licenced content. You could make a generational game and you’re still not making bank due to the licencing and you have no control over sequels, because it’s a licenced IP. I’ve heard a lot of top studios talk about how they prefer to create their own IP’s. The biggest publisher are most often getting their B/C teams working in licenced content whilst the top devs work on the real money making games.

Ultimately I think Lucasart should have remained its own studio, producing games to sell to publishers complete. But that was then and honestly Star Wars is not as popular as it used to be. What we need is Rogue Squadron type games, maybe some RPG’s or even MMO’s with this licence.

Oh well, surprise me Lucasfilm Games, produce a Star Wars game I want to buy and play. As always, leave your own thoughts below.
