James Bond Writer On Building A Continuity, andBlofeld

bond_suits_BANNERLongtime James Bond fans have become accustomed to the fact that the films are rarely connected beyond the fact that they are based around the same central characters. Most of the films function as standalone capers for 007, with little to no continuity between the films that precede and follow them. A recent example of how Bond’s producers are, perhaps, tweaking that formula for the next 50 years of James Bond flicks is how Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace were linked at the hip.

The approach wasn’t altogether successful, but that had more to do with with Quantum being a far inferior film to Royale. QoS struggled to gain support because of its troubled production that was marred by a writer’s strike, and a director who had never tackled a film of that scale. While it made plenty of money, the perception was that Bond’s first real attempt at connectivity failed to spark with audiences (with a B- CinemaScore) and critics because of the product, not the approach.

With Skyfall, the producers returned to the standalone format. But now we have word that writer John Logan, who worked with director Sam Mendes on that film, is looking to craft two sequels that build off of the machinations that Skyfall put in place.

My goal is to write a great movie that’s appropriate, to build on what we did on Skyfall, but make it its own unique animal,” said the writer during a chat with IGN at the TCA Press Tour. He continued, “The themes, ideas and the characters from Skyfall can obviously continue on, because it is a franchise, and it is an ongoing story. So I think there’s resonance from Skyfall in the new movie.

When the subject of Blofeld- Bond’s infamous nemesis that hasn’t been seen in a film since 1983’s Never Say Never Again– came up, since EON recently reacquired the rights to the character, Logan was non-committal. Despite there being a strong audience appetite to see the character re-imagined for the modern era, all the writer would reveal was “You know, I think our villain’s appropriate to the story we’re telling.”

Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised if the next film features a new, original villain, but plants the seeds for Blofeld. That would then lead into Bond 25 where we get to see the man himself.

The untitled Bond 24 is set to premiere on November 6, 2015. The film will once again be helmed by Sam Mendes, whose Skyfall was the most financially successful Bond film to date.

What do you guys think? Were you a fan of the standalone format? Do you want to see Blofeld return? Did you love Skyfall as much as everyone else seemed to? Sound off!
