As was reported early last week, filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s next project will be a film called “Dunkirk.” The film will be shot from Nolan’s own original screenplay, and will be set during the World War II evacuation of the beaches and harbor of Dunkirk, which took place over the course of eight days in 1940. During that time, 30,000 Allied troops were rescued. Although the film still isn’t due to hit theaters for another year and a half, we now know who will be composing the score for the film.
According to the folks over at Collider, Nolan’s next film will be scored by none other than Hans Zimmer. This doesn’t really come as a huge surprise for those who’ve been keeping score at home, as Zimmer is responsible for roughly half of Nolan’s scores, including music for “The Dark Knight,” “Inception,” and “Interstellar.”
“Dunkirk” will mark Christopher Nolan’s first attempt at a war film, and his first crack at something outside of the fantasy and science fiction realm since 2002’s “Insomnia.” Considering the filmmaker’s trajectory — what with his films progressively getting bigger in scope and more abstract in nature — it’s interesting that he’s decided to bring things back to Earth for this picture. And considering that this is previously uncharted territory for him and Zimmer as a unit, one can only wonder what to expect from the score.
There has been no official confirmation of cast, but Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy, and Mark Rylance are reportedly all in negotiations to join in what will be an ensemble cast.
“Dunkirk” is set to be filmed on a combination of both IMAX 65mm and 65mm large format film.
As far as what else Hans Zimmer has on his plate for 2017, “Dunkirk” is the first film he’s been attached to as of this writing. Of course, there’s a good chance something else will pop up in the months between January and July 2017, but for now, “Dunkirk” is all we know. Currently, the composer has four films slated for release this year, including “Kung Fu Panda 3,” “Batman v Superman,” “A Cure for Wellness,” and “Inferno.”
“Dunkirk” is set to hit theaters on July 21, 2017.
