Arrow was a series of humble origins. I’ve said it time and again. One of the draws of that initial season was the fact that it was a personal journey of a single man with a mission to save his city from the hands of the rich and the corrupt. With Season 2, we saw the arrival of Barry Allen, and the rest is history. The world expanded, and while it’s fair to say that it helped the entire DC CW ecosystem with shows like The Flash and Supergirl, one could also say that it’s that very ambition that doomed the standalone series.

Soon enough, Arrow began dealing with metahumans and magical beings on the regular. But before it jumped the proverbial shark, Arrow had an interesting arc wherein it had its very own iteration of the Suicide Squad take on a mission. Ultimately, it was nothing more than a sidestory for Diggle, but it was a cool one for those fans of the comic books, who likely never thought they’d see a live-action interpretation of the team.

So what was that all about? Was that something show creator Greg Berlanti really wanted to do to take the story to the next level, or was it something else? In an interview with Vulture, Berlanti revealed that Geoff Johns or other WB studio execs would make requests for the shows. The Suicide Squad episodes were a result of such a request:

“They said to us a year and a half before they started developing Suicide Squad, ‘Will you guys put [a version of] the Suicide Squad in your show? Because we want to have it as a film at some point.'”

This wasn’t the only hand such execs had in the Arrow-verse. One gigantic impact they had was on The Flash, namely on the character of Cisco Ramon:

“It also happened with Geoff when Geoff and Andrew [Kreisberg] and I were creating Flash. They were both really huge fans of Cisco Ramon, [also known as] Vibe, and had written a Vibe comic [in 2013] to try and bring him back. They said, ‘Could we please have Vibe on the show?'”

Both of these instances are pretty great. I really enjoyed that Suicide Squad subplot, and Cisco Ramon is easily my favorite character in The Flash.
