It seems like overnight, Michael Fassbender has morphed into one of the most respected and sought after actors in Hollywood. Of course, that’s not actually the case — the man’s been around for a solid fifteen years or so, though he only really mainstream appeal following his stint in Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 opus Inglourious Basterds. Like many others in his position, Fassbender has spent the time in his career switching off between fun blockbuster fare and smaller, more prestigious pictures.
Between his work on the X-Men films, Ridley Scott’s Alien prequels, and the upcoming Assassin’s Creed film (and potential franchise), it’s hard to miss the guy on the big screen. Well, interestingly enough, it turns out that Fassbender almost got involved in yet another big budget franchise. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Fassbender oh-so-gently grazed the topic of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and how he almost had a role in a galaxy far, far away.
“We talked about a role. We had a conversation. I’m pretty sure I was busy doing something else in the summer he was kickstarting that.â€
Of course, following a comment like that, it’s only natural to begin speculating as to what role they’d had a conversation about. There seem to be two distinct options for the thespian. The first that comes to this writer’s mind is that of Poe Dameron. While Fassbender may be better known for his brooding characters, the man has charisma to spare, and seeing him swagger across the screen in that character’s shoes doesn’t take much imagination.
A secondary character that comes to mind is that of General Hux, portrayed by Domhnall Gleeson. This is a character who is very much more in keeping with Fassbender’s repertoire thus far. Given the actor’s skill set, however, it also does seem like a role that could be a bit of a waste (though in all fairness, we’ve seen very little of him thus far, so who knows where his arc will take him).
While the film could have been a great addition to his filmography, I think the silver lining here is that he hasn’t yet played a role in a Star Wars film yet, as it means there is a very real opportunity for him to do so in the future. I can see him as either an amazing protagonist or antagonist in a standalone Star Wars flick following the Han Solo spinoff — whichever film that is. If it’s a bounty hunter flick, I can totally see him fitting right in along the likes of Boba Fett.
