In the wake of Ben Affleck’s decision to step down as director of The Batman, a number of names started to make the rounds with regard to who might replace him. One of the names on that list was Denis Villeneuve, the man who gave us Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival, and will bring us Blade Runner 2049 later this year. In recent months, though, Villeneuve was also rumored to be up for another big project: A reboot of Dune.
As it turns out, the folks at Legendary Pictures went ahead and secured Villeneuve’s services for Dune before he could even consider The Batman.
Yup, late last night it became official that Villeneuve was directing a new Dune when Brian Herbert, the son of author Frank Herbert, went on twitter and posted this:
It's official — Legendary Pictures has signed the very talented Denis Villeneuve to direct the exciting new DUNE series film project.

Villeneuve is a truly gifted filmmaker, and Dune will be lucky to have him.
It was probably always going to be a long shot that he’d take on The Batman anyway.
