Moana Hits $600 Million Worldwide

While plenty of us may already be enjoying Disney’s latest outing, Moana, on either Digital HD or Blu-ray, the film itself still hasn’t finished its theatrical run across the globe. In fact, just last weekend, the film opened in the land of the rising sun, bringing in a strong $6.2 million in its opening weekend during Japan’s spring break. While this may seem like small fry numbers compared to what we’re used to, it did help to push the animated film past an important milestone.

According to Variety, the film has now crossed $600 million worldwide. For a comparison, this puts it in fourth place in Disney’s whole pantheon of animated films. Here’s how it stacks up against the big dogs.

  1. Frozen – $1.2765 billion
  2. Zootopia – $1.0238 billion
  3. Big Hero 6 – $657.8 million
  4. Moana – $600 million
  5. Tangled – $591 million

It is interesting to see these numbers side-by-side. Given Moana’s budget of around $150 million, according to The Numbers (though Disney never released an official budget, most animated films of this scale cost around that much), the film has undoubtedly made a decent amount of profit in its time in theaters. However, there does seem to be a very big gap between the two highest grossing films — Frozen and Zootopia — and the “really good” performers like Big Hero 6, Moana, and Tangled

In our world of big, billion-dollar blockbusters, it’s easy to look at the last three and ask why they weren’t as successful as the other two, but in reality, I think both Frozen and Zootopia were anomalies. Frozen was (and continues to be) one of the biggest phenomenons in animated film history, and Zootopia was a flick that managed to work on a story level, and on a social commentary level, which I think helped in getting more curious audiences out to the theaters.

Additionally, Moana hit theaters in a very packed winter season, with movies falling on either side of it. So when all said and done, its success is very well earned and deserved.
