Seth Rogen and James Franco Team Up For ’90s Teen Drama On Hulu

James Franco and Seth Rogen have been friends and colleagues for a long time now, starting with a different 90’s teen series, Freak and Geeks, back in 1999. Since then, they have appeared in countless films together, including what I consider the “Rogen/Franco Trilogy” made up of Pineapple Express, This Is The End, and The Interview; all about the undying bromance between the two on-screen stoners. This doesn’t count the many cameos the two have enjoyed in the other’s projects and the upcoming, well reviewed, The Disaster Artist.

And that’s just acting! Both have experience behind the camera, with Franco directing The Disaster Artist, the documentary Saturday Night, and an episode of the Hulu show he starred in, Stephen King’s 11.22.63. Seth Rogen and his writing partner Evan Goldberg have also directed films and TV, from The Interview and This Is The End, to three episodes of AMC’s Preacher. Rogen and Goldberg are master comedy writers as well, writing Superbad, the enitre Rogen/Franco Trilogy, Sausage Party, and creating Preacher for AMC.

It makes perfect sense that Variety is reporting that the comedy duo of Franco and Rogen have been brought together by Hulu to executive produce… a drama? Say what?

Author Kelly Oxford is working with the pair to develop a currently untitled hour-long, ’90s teen drama for the online network that hired Franco to direct and star in 11.22.63. Rogen and Franco will executive produce, along with Franco’s producing partner Vince Jolivette and the aforementioned Evan Goldberg. It marks the first time the duo have collaborated on a television series, though both obviously have experience in television production.

I see no issues with this. Though both are famous for bringing the laughs, Rogen and Franco both have done some great dramatic work. On Rogen’s side, Preacher is no comedy and he played Steve Wozniak in Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs. Franco has even more experience outside of comedy, acting in, producing, and directing 11.22.63 and appearing in the upcoming film Alien: Covenant. Kelly Oxford has sold scripts to both CBS and NBC and wrote a New York Times Bestseller, Everything Is Perfect When You’re A Liar. Hulu’s shows keep getting better and better, so though a 90’s teen drama doesn’t sound quite like my cup of tea, this team has piqued my curiosity.

Do you think Rogen and Franco are the right team for such a job? And what are your favorite Hulu shows? Please leave your thoughts in the comment section below!
