War for the Planet of the Apes just released a brand new trailer, and man is it a doozy. It seems like quite the fitting capper to what may very well be one of the strongest trilogies out there. No joke.
The new Planet of the Apes trilogy that started with Rise of the Planet of the Apes and continued with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has exceeded expectations in every way imaginable. When it was first announced that an Apes prequel would be made, it seemed like little more than a cash grab on the part of the studio. We’ve spent a decent amount of time here talking about how Hollywood is always looking for some previous franchise to capitalize on, and this seemed like no exception. They’ll take any move that’ll increase a general audience’s likelihood of getting their butts to the theaters.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes came out and blew everyone away with its character-focused story, and its amazing performance capture of its lead Caesar, played by Andy Serkis. It was a film that was much better than it ever needed to be. Director Matt Reeves iterated on this sequel with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and made what could arguably be one of the strongest science fiction films of all time. It took the character of Caesar and surrounded him with character who would make William Shakespeare proud.
Needless to say, after that amazing film, our hopes are now unreasonably high for War for the Planet of the Apes. Can it live up to our gargantuan expectations? That’s hard to say, but the trailer is doing a solid job of selling us so far!
